Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation

The Key to Successful Recovery

Surgery is often just the first step in correcting an orthopaedic problem. Physical therapy (PT) is critical for restoring strength, range of motion, and function. At Behrens Spine & Joint Institute, we view PT as an integral part of your treatment plan, not an afterthought.

Pre-Habilitation ("Pre-Hab")

We often recommend starting therapy before surgery. "Pre-hab" helps to strengthen the muscles around the joint, improve flexibility, and prepare your body for the procedure. Patients who undergo pre-hab often experience faster recoveries and better outcomes.

Post-Operative Rehabilitation

After surgery, a structured PT program helps you:

  • Reduce Pain and Swelling: Specific exercises and modalities (like ice and elevation) help manage post-op symptoms.
  • Regain Motion: Gentle stretching prevents scar tissue from limiting your joint's movement.
  • Rebuild Strength: Strengthening the muscles around the joint provides stability and protection.
  • Return to Activity: Whether it's walking without a cane or returning to competitive sports, PT helps you achieve your specific functional goals.

Non-Surgical Rehabilitation

For many conditions, such as early arthritis, tendonitis, or back pain, physical therapy is the primary treatment. A customized exercise program can often resolve symptoms without the need for surgery.
